Things that were popular in the past trended for a reason, and there’s no reason why they can’t be popular now. Retro design, even if somewhat muddled and widespread, can be just as effective and appealing now as it was back then.

3 Beautiful Brides Free Prints Vintage My favorite in this collection is the beautiful Fairy Bride. This fairy wears a flowing white gown with a veil. She is standing in the grass, and the cutest beetle is holding her train. This pretty print is a black and white etching with the prettiest yellow touches on her dress and green on the plants.

1 Fabulous Monkey This antique natural history print, features such a gorgeous looking monkey! This cute monkey is climbing on a branch. He is in dark brown, with what looks like grey stripes on his face, and deep brown eyes. Be sure and click to view details on this amazing print, it’s amazing how the individual hairs of his fur are drawn in.

2 Christmas Tree Printables One of these lovely artworks prints shows a huge pine tree in its natural setting with mountains in the background. A couple sits on a log in the foreground. The colors on this one are softer green, grey and brown tones.

3 Orange and Brown Butterflies and Moths This lovely set of prints show Autumn hued Butterflies and Moths. Included are the pretty antique print that you see above, which shows nine butterflies and moths artfully arranged on a sepia toned background. I love the variety in color and wing shape on these! The butterflies are all in tones of orange, rust, red, and brown. A few have nice blue accents. So crisp and clear they almost look like photographs.

While the psychedelic genre continued well into the 70s, the introduction of jazz, disco and funk – as well as the iconic Woodstock Festival – gave the 70s its groovy reputation. Dominated by mega famous musicians such as ABBA, The Bee Gees, and Pink Floyd, the 70s was a defining decade for music that continues to influence musicians to this day.

The feeling of nostalgia is a powerful force when it comes to influencing how your design is perceived. According to Nostalgia and Its Value to Design Strategy: Some Fundamental Considerations, a paper presented at the Proceedings of the Tsinghua-DMI International Design Management Symposium, “Cognitive theorists believe that emotions have a strong influence on human behavior, that is, people will be attracted by the objects that evoke positive emotions and forced away from those things that evoke negative emotions. Nostalgia, like other positive emotions, when it is evoked by certain stimulus (e.g., products, brands), will incite people to approach (e.g., to purchase or to interact with) it.”

When looking at the graphic design industry, you can observe the shift in design trends over the years. However, one thing has remained constant: the love for nostalgia. Even in 2024, people still enjoy reminiscing about a time when the retro graphic design trend dominated the design space.

During the 80s, the tropical trend – think palm trees, sunsets, neon, and pastels – was in full swing. Represented in film posters, album covers (hello Wham!), clothing and home decor, designers began expressing themselves through extraordinary colors, florals, and angular shapes that embodied the colorful, tropical style.

Over the past few years, there has been a notable resurgence in the revival of vintage classic styles in design techniques. This trend has evoked a sense of nostalgic feeling among people of all ages, allowing them to relive experiences from the past. Whether it’s in movies, TV shows, comics, magazines, or vintage-inspired fashion ramp walks, the utilization of retro techniques is making a strong comeback, aiming to evoke diverse emotions among the audience.

Retro art doesn’t have to be completely accurate to the past. Often retro designs simply take a few elements from a certain timeframe and incorporate them into a modern environment. Nowadays, retro style is often used to describe new things that have the characteristics of the past. The word retro itself derives from Latin and means ‘past times’.
